Harsh Realities and Little Known Facts About Auto Services

If your car is making certain noises or emitting certain odours, there may be something wrong with it. Hi! My name is Emmeline, and I love working with cars. I grew up in the outback, and my papa had me by his side while he was fixing cars and agriculture equipment from the time I was very little. The process still fascinates me. I decided to create a blog devoted to auto service, and in this space, I plan to post a bit of everything, ranging from little known facts to harsh realities about cars. I hope that you like these posts and that they help you learn more about auto service.

Steering Trouble? 4 Symptoms Of Power Steering Failure In Your Car

The secret to having a seamless and comfortable drive lies behind the smooth functionality of yourpower steering system. Any failure in your power steering system can lead to a potential accident, so it needs to be addressed immediately. This guide is designed to help you notice symptoms of power steering failure in your car.

Steering Becomes Hard

An obvious symptom of a power steering failure is when the system becomes hard, making it difficult to turn. If the steering becomes stiff while turning or if it takes time to respond, then it could be because the level of power steering fluid is low or because of problems with the power steering pump. This problem can also occur if the steering drive belt is damaged. If you notice hard steering, be sure to head to a mechanic specialising in power steering systems to get the problem rectified.

Moaning Or Squeaking Sounds

A moaning or squeaking sound occurs if your power steering fluid level is low. It may also indicate that the power steering pump is broken. These sounds are typically heard when a car starts or when it turns, and it comes from under the hood. A troubled power steering may also give out a groaning sound when the car is idling.

Steering Wheel Vibrates While Driving

A vibrating steering wheel is caused when the belt is damaged or loose. This steering drive belt needs to be replaced for your system to work efficiently again. A drive belt must have proper tension or it will damage the steering wheel pump. If the belt happens to slip out of place over time or if it snaps in an area, then you will notice vibrations while using your power steering system.

Low Fluid Levels Or Dark Colours

If the power steering fluid is low or if the colour has darkened because of oxidisation, then your power steering is likely to fail. Low fluid levels indicate potential leakage, which needs professional intervention. You can typically spot the leak when the vehicle is stationary.  Low levels of fluid may also lead to noises in the pump. Fluid that darkens in colour over time can also damage power steering systems because they harden in the tubes over time. If you notice any foam or bubbles in the fluid, then it could be because water or air mixed with it. You will need to flush out the old fluid and replace it with new fluid.

Identifying and addressing a power steering problem immediately will prevent potential accidents, so be sure to head to a qualified mechanic if you notice these issues.
